Broken Beach Talk

I added a weave collection!

I have been interested in nature all my life. Living things, trees, rocks, leaves, flowers, bees, the ocean, shells and cactuses. If it is an oddity, I am all in. My husband, Rich, knows full well what I mean. I can’t even count on the hands and toes of everyone I have ever come across how many times I have said to him, “look at this!!” and then show him some weird piece of nature. In addition to being a nature explorer, I also love to sew. It started with my mom. She was always needlepointing, embroidering or crocheting. She had a lot of hobbies like me. I would watch her in amazement create a beautiful blanket or a nativity set for her collection and think, how can she be so talented? She was. Every cell in her.

I followed in her footsteps by needlepointing with a pattern. Carefully placing all the “x’s” and counting. Then it was free form. I would just start creating on a blank canvas. Then embroidery. That was always free hand- wildflowers, mason jars, a little girl at the center looking sad. Then I would put those in a shadowbox and add dried flowers to the bottom. Nature. I was not hindered by logic. The more chaotic and fun, the better. Colors, texture, fibers, solid elements, flowers. Sew them right in. I saw a few folks on Instagram that did chunky, nature weaving and I fell in love. It literally combined all of my sewing, junk journaling, ocean art and fiber in 1 single piece of art.

As I followed some great folks like Moth Metal, Roving Textiles, Nova Mercury, The Woven Hand, Ashton Zager Fiber Art I realized I found where I am supposed to be. This community is full of emotion, raw honesty, passion and a need to create to heal the mind and heart. I am a beginner to weaving but not a beginner in art and combining all of them to create unique, intentional, raw pieces is a blessing and I am grateful for the time and energy needed. I hope I do the community proud. Not I hope, I WILL.
